Duterte blames US for "undermining" Philippine peso

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday blamed the United States for "undermining" the Philippines economy and bringing on the Philippine peso to tumble against the US dollar.

"The Americans are undermining us now. They are controlling ... the peso debilitated," Xinhua news organization cited Duterte as saying in a discourse at the Philippine marine home office in Taguig.

The Philippine peso hit a seven-year low on Monday, shutting down at 48.25 to a dollar, the weakest since the end of 48.335 on September 15, 2009.

Duterte told the marine troops that "the Americans are harassing the Philippines," including that the US has slighted the Philippines.

The Philippines is a bargain partner of the US, with Manila depending a lot on the US for military and other help.

In any case, Duterte said the US "can't comprehend a companion".

"Rather than helping us, they will assault you," he said.

In the event that the US will keep putting weight and controlling the Philippines, Duterte cautioned, "I will have new partnerships of business and exchange."

He asked for the comprehension of the marine troops. "This Republic will rise. This Republic of the Philippines will keep on being extraordinary," he said.

"Time will come that we needn't bother with them any longer. We will make due all alone. We battle our wars all alone and we will win as a nation," Duterte said.

A few divisions faulted the devaluation of the peso for Duterte's acidic articulations against US President Barack Obama and the United Nations.

In any case, Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno told a news instructions at the Malacnang presidential royal residence that Duterte's announcement has nothing to do with the peso deterioration, saying the debilitating of the peso is "a consequence of the reinforcing of the dollar, more than debilitating of the peso".

"What's more, why is the dollar reinforcing? Due to the looming increment in the financing cost by the Fed. This has been progressing for a few quarters as of now," Diokno said.
